This show is better than your average detective weekly. Putting the form and function of an active investigation on screen while displaying the highs and lows of Las Vegas. I like There's only so many times you can watch 2 detectives go around to interview people and have their case expand in front of them (ie Law & Order). The only flaw I see in this show is that they don't spend enough time on the people, its all about the cases. Sometimes, you need to know more about the people working to understand why they approach their cases the way they do.
NBC, along with the other networks, needed an ensemble answer to ABC's Lost. Lost had mystery, an intriguing cast full of flashback-worthy histories, surprise twists and a monster ratings pull. . . when it started off. As season 2 came to a close, episode delays, loose ends in stories and too many unanswered questions got people looking for a NEW show to intrigue. Enter, Heroes. Heroes takes its stories and ensemble all around the US, even around the world. Like Lost, it offers numerous mysteries for the viewer to get curious about and try to figure out, but where they learned Lost's lessons is Heroes does not allow itself to be buried beneath the weight of those mysteries. They answer enough to keep you in the story while introducing just enough to keep the mystery going.
People all around the world are discovering they have telepathy, accelerated healing, invisibility and even the ability to fly. The powers are fun to see on prime-time but the real catch is the relationships between the characters, the curious connection they have with each other and some as for yet unseen forces.
Dexter (2006-current) - SHO
Based on a series of novels about a serial killer working for the police, Dexter reigns as one of my more favorite recent discoveries. Flipping channels one Sunday night, I came across the pilot episode, got curious and got hooked. I've always been into good crime dramas but this one takes the cake. The writing is spot on from what I can recall about the psychology behind psychopaths and sociopaths. This is a story of people realizing who they are, what they want and what it takes to get it....oh, and a fair amount murder.
Smallville (2001-current) - CW
